Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travelers.
It is hung by an adjustable hand-plaited cord.
This piece was hand carved by Yuki Tanaka and measures 86 x 58 x 8mm.
