Wahaika, meaning ‘mouth of the fish’, were named so for the distinctive notch in the blade used to catch an opponent’s weapon to disarm them in hand-to-hand combat. Typically carved from native hardwood or whale bone, wahaika would often be used by rangatira (chiefs) during ceremonies and speeches to accentuate and add gravitas.
These wahaika were carved by Steven Fehoko from black maire sourced from central Waikato of Te Ika-a-Māui, Aotearoa. They measure approximately 340mm by 110mm, have a semi-polished finish, and is bound with an hand-braided cord.
Note: This listing is for a single wahaika maire. Please get in contact if a specific one is desired, otherwise one will be chosen at random from our collection.
