Identical in form to mere pounamu, patu are short striking weapons made used by both men and women during oratory and warfare. Used in short quick motions, they could be augmented with a longer string wrapped around the hand to create a close-range projectile. In today’s world, their use is largely ceremonial with orators wielding patu in their left hand, adding weight to their words.
These patu were carved by Steven Fehoko from black maire sourced from central Waikato of Te Ika-a-Māui, Aotearoa. They measure approximately 360mm by 90mm, have a semi-polished finish, and is bound with an hand-braided cord.
Note: This listing is for a single patu maire. Please get in contact if a specific one is desired, otherwise one will be chosen at random from our collection.
