Huia were symbols of status, mana and beauty. These rare birds, sought after by Maori, were used for chiefly adornments with both their feathers and their beaks being highly prized. Now extinct, their likeness and symbolic status is preserved in pounamu.
This male ngutu huia was carved by Alex Sands from raukaraka pounamu. It measures 48mm by 14mm and is bound with an adjustable handbraided cord.
Huia being loyal mates would often be captured in pairs. Find the matching female ngutu huia here.
