Huia were symbols of status, mana and beauty. These rare birds, sought after by Māori, were used for chiefly adornments, with both their feathers and their beaks being highly prized. Now extinct, their likeness and the symbolism they embodied are preserved in taonga crafted from pounamu.
This female ngutu huia was carved by Alex Sands from raukaraka pounamu sourced from Te Wai Pounamu. It measures 70mm by 18mm and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
Huia being loyal mates would often be captured in pairs. Find the matching male ngutu huia here.
