With expertise and power the carver wields the adze. Relied on for survival in ancient times, traditional tools are imbued with significance and meaning. The toki epitomises the artistry and skill of the craftsman, protector and provider. Of great mana (prestige), to wield the toki is to wield strength.
This hei toki was carved by Yuki Tanaka from inanga pounamu sourced from Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It has been embellished with 3 lines that represent the 3 kete of knowledge obtained by Tāne for mankind. It measures 56mm by 18mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided polyester cord.
