Koauau are a form of flute used in traditional healing ceremonies, in welcoming new life, and escorting departing spirits. The tangi (sound) of the koauau were also known to mimic native manu (birds) and draw in people from further afield.
This piece measures 138 x 29 x 29 mm and was hand-carved by Yuki Tanaka.
