Paraoa Nguru with Kowhaiwhai

Nguru are flutes carved in the natural shape of the whale tooth. They are commonly played by mouth or using the nostrils to produce haunting and melodius tones. They were traditionally played in times of sorrow and remeberance at tangihanga (funerals) or in solitude.

This piece features Kowhaiwhai patterns and three paua shell eye. It was carved by Alex Sands and measures 100 x 35mm.
