In the ancient Māori world, the Toki or adze was a vital tool in everyday life. Toki have come to represent the strength and skill of an individual, and the acquisition of knowledge and mana (prestige).
Kokopu comes from the Arahura River on the West Coast between Greymouth and Hokitika. The spots on the stone resemble the patterns on the Kokopu (speckled trout) which is the Māori name for the New Zealand native trout.
This Kokopu Hei Toki is hung by a tan adjustable hand-plaited cord and measures 90 x 26mm.
This piece was hand-carved by Nikki Shaw.
