Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travelers.

This piece was designed and carved from cow bone. It was carved by Peter Mitchell and is hung by an adjustable hand-plaited cord. The size of this piece is approximately 45 x 28 mm.
