Matau manaia are contemporary forms and wearable taonga, that provide protection to their wearer. The matau-manaia personifies Tangaroa, the guardian over all living creatures in ngā puna wai (water sources).
It is hung by an adjustable, hand platted cord. It has been carved and sanded from raukaraka pounamu from the Marsden district, and inlaid with South Island paua shell.
