Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers.
When Māui fished up the North Island, he is said to have used a hook in this style.
This piece was hand carved by Samuel Potter and is hung by a black adjustable hand platted cord.
