Wheku Kahurangi - Greenstone Carved Pendant

Sands Carving Studio

Literally meaning ‘carved face,’ wheku are traditionally carved from wood and mounted on the gable of whare tupuna. There, they represent a venerated ancestor that the building is named after. Wheku are an ideal gift for those who are intimately connected to their whakapapa and those who want a more direct bond to tupuna (an ancestor).

This wheku was carved by Yuki Tanaka from kahurangi pounamu sourced from Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 22mm in diameter, has a matt finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided polyester cord.

This taonga doubles as both a pendant and a seal.
