Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers. It features a hiku tohorā (whale tail).
This piece was hand-carved by Peter Mitchell from beef bone. It measures 50 x 30 x 7 mm and has an adjustable hand-plaited black cord.
