The manaia is the embodiment of mana - the archetypal Māori measure of worth, respect, and prestige. Along with its role as a kaitiaki (protector) of earth, sea and sky, manaia are spiritual beings which act as messengers between the earthly world and the spiritual. With ethereal presence and energy, manaia protects the wearer and helps maintain spiritual balance.
This manaia was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kawakawa pounamu sourced from Rangitoto ki te Tonga (D'Urville Island ) of Te Wai Pounamu. It measures 72mm by 32mm and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
