Kia ora koutou te whānau. This Matai Māripi has been hand carved Mātai New Zealand native timber and engraved with unaunahi. It has been and inlay with paua shell eyes. The 7 Gill shark teeth are carved from pounamu and bound with a hand woven 3 plait cord.
Maripi are traditional knives composed of wood and sharks’ teeth, lashed into place by Muka (flax fibre). Used to cut whale or shark and other utilitarian tasks. Some accounts suggest they were also used in battle.
