Kākā pōria were originally leg rings used on captive birds kept as prized possessions, kept for their song and to attract other kākā (native parrots) and manu (birds) from afar. Today these pendants are given as tohu (a token) to an orator, singer, or close friend.
This kākā pōria was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kawakawa pounamu sourced from Big Bay of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 45mm by 43mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided polyester cord.
