Wheku Kawakawa - Greenstone Carved Pendant

Sands Carving Studio

Literally meaning ‘carved face,’ wheku are traditionally carved from wood and mounted on the gable of whare tupuna. There, they represent a venerated ancestor that the building is named after. Wheku are an ideal gift for those who are intimately connected to their whakapapa and those who want a more direct bond to tupuna (an ancestor).

This wheku was carved by Yuki Tanaka from kawakawa pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 32mm by 23mm, has a glossy finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
