Koauau are a form of flute used in traditional healing ceremonies, in welcoming new life, and escorting departing spirits. The tangi (sound) of the koauau were also known to mimic native manu (birds) and draw in people from further afield.
This koauau was carved by Yuki Tanaka from kōkopu pounamu sourced from Big Bay of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 90mm by 28mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
