A kotiate is a short, thrusting weapon designed for close combat. The name "kotiate" means "to cut" or "sever," and it's believed the weapon's shape may be inspired by the form of "te ate" (the liver). While it's true that chiefs often held weapons as a sign of status and authority while delivering whaikorero (speeches), the kotiate's primary function was as a weapon, not a speaking implement. It's unlikely it would have been used during a speech.
This kotiate was hand-carved by Alex Sands and measures 287 x 118 mm.
