Matau-manaia are contemporary forms of wearable taonga, that provide protection to their wearer. The matau-manaia personifies Tangaroa, the guardian over all living creatures in ngā puna wai (water sources)
This taonga was hand-carved by Sam Potter from Kōkopu pounamu sourced from Arahura of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 6cm by 3.8cm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
