Manaia Inanga - Greenstone Guardian Pendant Sculpture

Sands Carving Studio

The manaia is the embodiment of mana - the archetypal Māori measurement of worth, respect, and prestige. Along with its role as a kaitiaki (protector) of earth, sea and sky, manaia are spiritual beings which act as messengers between the earthly world and the spiritual. With ethereal presence and energy, manaia protect the wearer and help maintain spiritual balance.

This manaia was carved by Mike Matchett from inanga pounamu. With a single eye facing outward, this simplified manaia form has whakapapa notches down one side to represent the ancestral connection. It measures 175mm by 53mm and comes on a brass and wooden stand.
