Tohorā (whales) are highly regarded kin or tūpuna to Māori and the kaitiaki (guardians) of the realm of Tangaroa, the atua of the ocean. In the Māori world, they are an omen of the supernatural and a sign of abundance because of their many offerings, even in death.
This hiku tohorā was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kawakawa pounamu at our whare whakairo in Kirikiriroa. The pendant has a matt finish, measures 102mm by 47mm, and is hung on a hand-plaited adjustable cord.
