Hiku Tohorā Kawakawa - Greenstone Whale Tail Necklace

Sands Carving Studio

Tohorā (whales) are highly regarded kin or tupuna to Māori and the kaitiaki (guardians) of the realm of Tangaroa, atua of the ocean. In the Māori world, they are an omen of the supernatural and a sign of abundance because of their many offerings, even in death.

This hiku tohorā was carved by Jeremy Walsh at our whare whakairo in Kirikiriroa from kawakawa pounamu. The pendant has a matt finish, measures 70mm by 40mm, and is hung on a hand-plaited adjustable cord.
