Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers.
This hei matau was beautifully crafted by Allen Hartnett from translucent inanga pounamu. It measures 78 x 55 mm and has a black adjustable hand-plaited cord.
Allen Hartnett, who is also a sculptor, works in jade, bone and stone.
