Hei Taniwha Paikea - Whale Bone Taniwha Pendant

Sands Carving Studio

Taniwha are the nature spirits of Aotearoa. Peaceful or malicious, they can be found in deep rivers, dark caves, and dense bush and take the form of large animals or serpents, or even more fantastical creatures. Taniwha were often considered kaitiaki (protectors) of the surrounding area and could be appeased with offerings and karakia (prayer).

This hei taniwha was carved by Steven Fehoko Jr. from humpback whale rib bone sourced from Aotearoa. It measures 184mm by 44mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
