Roimata Raukaraka - Greenstone Teardrop

Sands Carving Studio

The roimata (teardrop) embodies our emotions in times of joy, sadness, celebration and tribulation. Traditionally made from pounamu adzes or similar tools that were too worn down to be functional, they were gifted as a way of remembering the history and tupuna (ancestors). They remind us of our humanity, and our ability to overcome adversity even when the path is spiritually difficult.

This Roimata was carved by Aden Hoglund from raukaraka pounamu sourced from Wamea in the South Island. It measures 58mm by 27mm and is bound by a handbraided adjustable cord.
