Only ever made from pounamu, the mere is a symmetrical teardrop in form. Simple in form but a deadly weapon in the hands of an expert. Mere were highly-prized taonga and heirlooms handed down from one generation to the next. To possess a mere signified the status and mana (authority) of those who would wield it. Historically, mere were often used in ceremonies or on occasion as a gift to settle grievances.
This mere was carved by Yuki Tanaka from raukaraka/kahurangi pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 398mm by 93mm on its own, and 400mm by 195mm on a wooden base. The mere has a glossy finish, and is bound with an hand-braided cord.
