Manaia, a powerful personal guardian in Māori tradition, embodies mana – the concept of power, authority, and prestige. Believed to possess ethereal presence and energy, the manaia protects its wearer and maintains spiritual balance. In Māori cosmology, the manaia is often depicted as a kaitiaki (protector) and messenger between the earthly and spiritual worlds.
This manaia was carved by Jeremy Walsh from totoweka fading into inanga pounamu, sourced from Big Bay of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 60mm by 25mm, has a glossy finish, inlayed with paua eye and set with red sealing wax, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
