This Kapeu pendant is made from pounamu and bound by a black adjustable wax hand-plaited adjustable wax cord. It measures 19 x 2 cm and was carved by Alex Sands.
Kapeu are traditionally worn by both genders and indicate that an individual holds mana (prestige). Kapeu can be further decorated with feathers to enhance their appearance. These taonga were a sign of status, leadership and authority.
