Wahaika were commonly used prior to European settlement and made from either whale bone or wood. The name means mouth of a fish, because of its general shape.

Black Maire wood, native to Aotearoa, grows sparsely from North Cape to Kaikoura. Known for its durability, it was used by Māori for implements and weapons. Māori also consumed its fruit.

This piece measures 33.5 x 10 cm and sits on a native timber and brass base. It was carved by Alex Sands.
