Kia ora koutou te whānau. I just finished up this Matai māripi. Which is now on our website.
This māripi has been hand carved from mātai wood, engraved with unaunahi and inlayed with paua shell. The 7 Gill shark teeth are carved from pounamu and bound with a hand woven 3 plat.
Maripi are traditional knives composed of wood and sharks’ teeth, lashed into place by Muka (flax fibre). Used to cut whale or shark and other utilitarian tasks. Some accounts suggest they were also used in battle.
