Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers.

This piece was carved from bovine bone and hand-carved by Peter Mitchell. It is hung by an adjustable hand-plaited wax cord and  measures 50 x 30 x 7 mm.
