Manaia are the kaitiaki (guardian) of the earth, sky, and sea. Worn as a pendant they protect the wearer from harm and are a symbol of status, mana (prestige), and whairawa (wealth).
It has been carved from a kawakawa pounamu, found on Serpentine beach, inlaid with red sealing wax in the eyes. and mounted on a native rimu wooden stand and a brass frame holding it
