Matau Manaia are contemporary forms and wearable taonga, that provide protection to their wearer.
The matua manaia personifies Tangaroa, the guardian over all living creatures in ngā puna wai (water sources).
This manaia is carved from Totoweka greenstone, Totoweka means "the blood of the weka", and is characterised by red streaks or spots through the stone.
It is hung by an adjustable black hand platted cord.
This piece was hand carved by Yuki Tanaka and measures 100 x 55 x 5mm.
