Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers.
This piece was designed and hand from cow bone carved and is hung by an adjustable hand platted cord.
