Huia were symbols of status, mana and beauty. These rare birds, sought after by Maori, were used for chiefly adornments. Both their feathers and their beaks are highly sought after. Now extinct, their likeness and symbolic status is preserved in pounamu.
It is hung by an adjustable hand platted cord, and which has been bound on using a ridge knot method.
