Marama represents the shape of the moon and symbolises Te Mauri (life force). They are blessed by tohunga through Tohi (ceremony) to become a mauri stone. Te Mauri would be suspended from the waka, into the ocean, to guide their vessel to their desired destination.
This piece was carved by Samuel Potter and the silver fern was made by John Mayo. It comes on a silver chain plated with rhodium (which helps prevent tarnishing).
