Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers.

It is hung by an adjustable hand platted cord, and which has been bound on using a slip knot method. It has been carved and sanded from pounamu.
