his Aotea Rei Niho It is hung by a black adjustable hand platted cord and hand carved by Samuel Potter and measures 4.5 x 3 cm.

Rei puta are chiefly taonga traditionally carved from the teeth of Tohorā (whale). Rei niho carved from pounamu maintains the beauty of the traditional form, symbolising the intimate connection between Maori and Tohorā.

This Rei Niho is carved from Aotea stone, a rare stone found only in one area of South  Westland, NZ.  Also known as Hine, the stone is a blend of kyanite(blue), fushsite(green) and Quartz (white) and can often have a glittery appearance.
