Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers.

This piece is carved from bovine bone and is hung by an adjustable hand-plaited wax cord. The size of this piece is 67 x 22 mm and it was hand-carved by Peter Mitchell.
