This Mataī Wahaika - New Zealand Black Pine War Club has been carved Mataī timber and features a muka coloured braided wrist tau (cord) and sits on a basalt base with brass fittings.

This collectible piece has been hand-carved and polished by Alex Sands and measures approximately 335 x 110 x 24 mm.

Wahaika were commonly used prior to European settlement and made from either whale bone or wood. The name means mouth of a fish, because of its general shape.

Mataī is one of the rākau rangatira (chiefly trees) of the ancient forests of Aotearoa. Maori used the wood of Mataī for the carving of canoes and implements and drank the sap to cleanse the body.
