Pekapeka Inanga - Greenstone Bat Pendant

Sands Carving Studio

The name pekapeka comes from the native bat of Aotearoa. With eyes in both the physical and spiritual realms, the pekapeka is a formidable kaitiaki (protector). Worn on special occasions, it is carved as twin outward facing manaia (guardians) connected by a single body. It is said that Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga, the great trickster, would take on the form of the pekapeka.

This pekapeka was carved by Jeremy Walsh from inanga pounamu sourced from Rimu of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 104mm by 65mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided polyester cord.
