Patu onewa were crafted from basalt (onewa or okewa). These were both practical weapons and highly-prized taonga (heirlooms) handed down from one generation to the next. To possess a patu onewa signified the status and mana (authority) of those who would wield it.

This patu was carved by Hiram Higgins and measures 350 x 97mm
