Hei Matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers.

This Inanga Hei Matau is hung by a black adjustable hand-plaited cord and measures 78 x 55 mm and was carved by Allen Hartnett.

Hartnett, who is also a sculptor, works in jade, bone and stone.
