In the ancient Māori world, the Toki or adze was a vital tool in everyday life. Toki have come to represent the strength and skill of an individual, and the acquisition of knowledge and mana (prestige).

The toki is carved from Aroha Stone, (Piedamontite Schist), which is characterised by beautiful colours ranging from pink to dark purple.  The stone contains mica which gives it a magical shimmer and sparkle.  In Maori the word Aroha means “unconditional love”.

This piece was hand carved by Nikki Shaw and measures at 36 x 17 x 6mm.
