Rei Puta are chiefly taonga traditionally carved from the teeth of Tohorā (whale). Rei Niho, carved from seal teeth, maintains the beauty of the traditional form, symbolising the intimate connection between Māori and Tohorā.
This piece has a paua eye on each side and hangs from a black adjustable hand-plaited wax cord and was hand-carved by Alex Sands.
