This pre-European style of hook was prominent in New Zealand between 1700 and 1850.

Hei Matau are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers.

This piece was hand-carved by Jeremey Walsh and measures 60mm in diameter.
