Purerehua - Native Timber Bull-roarer

The oro (song) of the pūrerehua is designed to imitate the whirling and fluttering of the native pūriri moth. The pūrerehua is an instrument for communicating with those from this realm and the one beyond. They are blade-like and swing on a long cord producing a loud, deep whirring sound that can be heard from a distance.

Traditional uses varied from luring lizards, summoning rain and attracting a soul mate.

This beautifully crafted purerehua was carved and crafted by Alex Sands using the native timber of Aotearoa. It measures 27 x 5 x 7cm.
