Wahaika, meaning 'mouth of a fish,' were close-combat weapons designed for hand-to-hand combat. Their notched edges were used to disarm an opponent or to inflict debilitating blows in close quarters.
This wahaika was carved by Alex Sands from parāoa (whale bone) . It measures 35 x 10 cm and features manaia with inlaid paua shell eyes.
